Dominican artisans handcrafted stone walkways, decorative hardware, charming furniture and buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metalwork and stone carving. Under Coppa’s direction, each stone was hand-cut, each wooden door frame was hand-made, and each detail of hand-forged wrought iron. The construction of the town began in 1976 and the town was inaugurated in 1982 with Frank Sinatra’s concert in the amphitheater. The Art Gallery is dedicated to promoting national culture through the Dominican art exhibition. A crucial exhibition platform for art and design students, the Gallery also serves as the venue for high-level international exhibitors. Dominican artists performing at the Gallery gain vital access to Altos de Chavón’s large number of world visitors. At the same time, international artists exhibiting at the Gallery are offered entry to the Dominican artistic community, resulting in rich dialogue and intercultural exchange.
